FERRUM, Va. Kendra Heim sent home a rebound from a Lauren
Denhalter shot with 2:32 left on the clock of the first overtime,
as Southern Virginia Women's soccer beat Ferrum 2-1. Denhalter's
40-yard shot had caromed off the crossbar and in to the path of the
streaking Heim who hit the one time shot past the Panther keeper.
The 2-1 victory pushes the Knights to a 6-4-1 record for the
season.
It was a tense encounter from the beginning, as the hosts looked
to get on the board quickly and get a second win of the season.
Goalkeeper Mariah Flake was needed throughout the first half as she
posted 4 saves. Flake produced a highlight reel save as she made a
diving save to her right after a Panther breakaway. Both teams went
in to halftime deadlocked at zero, but not due to lack of chances.
"It was a little nerve-wracking," said Head Coach Matt Grawrock.
"We had moments where we played well, and then we had moments where
we struggled. I felt that the moments where we struggled were due
more to our mistakes then anything else. Ferrum put great pressure
on us, and I'm not sure we reacted as well as we should have."
The second half was another back and forth affair, but the
Knights looked to gain the edge and nudged ahead with sixteen
minutes left to play. A long pass was corralled by Heim who made it
to the end line and then turned to goal. Heim then slotted a pass
across goal to a wide-open Taylor Osborn for the tap-in and the 1-0
lead. The Knights were unable to hold the lead as the Panthers
fought back, and tied it up with eight minutes left. Both teams had
chances to score before regulation ended, but overtime was on the
cards for the night. Each team had a shot on goal in the overtime
before Heim notched the winner.
"It was a very resilient performance," said Grawrock. "We easily
could have been deflated after they scored, and tied it, but we
stepped up and earned that second goal. I think it was a great team
performance. This team has a lot of potential, and they're living
up to it. It's fun to watch them."
The Knights will return to action Oct. 10 when they host Davis
& Elkins. The home game will be the first of a three game home
stand. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00.
