NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Powered by a Kezia Ford double-double, the
Southern Virginia Women's Basketball team swept past Briarcliffe
69-49. Ford recorded 20-points and 13-rebounds as the Knights were
able to keep Briarcliffe from scoring more than twenty in the
second half and sprinted past the Lady Seahawks for the second
victory of the season.
"It's a good recovery step after a tough loss last week," said
Head Coach Mike Harmon. "Kezia had a very solid game, and her
performance sparked everyone else. You need wins like this, and as
a young team you need to see progression. We saw that out here
today. If we keep making little improvements every game, then we
should be in great shape for the post-season."
SVU played a powerful inside game as they recorded 53 rebounds
in the game. Ford led the team with her 13, followed by Amanda
Prestwich and Ashley Baird who had nine rebounds apiece. Prestwich
had another solid performance, as she combined her strong
rebounding performance with 17-points. Ford led the team in assist
with six, while Jessica Anderson contributed another 4, and Kara
Hiatt had 3.
The Knights shot 38% from the field and were 13 for 26 from the
free-throw line. The Knights return to action Nov. 21 when they
play the second game of the Great Ships Classic. The classic is
hosted by fellow USCAA member, The Apprentice School. SVU will play
Penn State-Fayette. The Knights are now 2-2 on the season.
