In an historic afternoon, the Southern Virginia University Men's
Soccer team opened the new Southern Virginia Soccer Field with a
game against Bridgewater College. A large crowd welcomed the team,
and the Knights responded with an early goal. It looked to be a
first home win on the new field, but the Eagles had other plans and
ruined the festivities, winning 4-1.
It was a beautiful day, and the surroundings were great for a first
ever soccer game on the SVU campus. Cisco Osegueda got the Knights
moving in the right direction with goal off an assist from Chris
Teerlink inside the first fifteen minutes. SVU was only able to
hold the lead for ten minutes, as Bridgewater was able to tie the
game up with a goal in the 25th minute. From there the Eagles laid
onslaught to the SVU goal, and were able to put away three more
goals in the second term.
The score line does not tell the whole story, as the Knights were
able to record more shots, and had plenty of possession of the
ball. Indeed, the game was fairly even all game, and the winning
goal for Bridgewater came late in the second half, followed by
quick fire strikes in the dying minutes of the game.
The Knights will look to right the ship this week before they head
to play Bluefield on Sept. 9. Kick off for the game is set for 7:00
PM.
