ASHEVILLE, NC. The Southern Virginia Football team could not
find an answer to the Brevard College running game, and lost 42-7.
The Knights fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Tornados improve
on their perfect start to the season at 4-0.
The lone score for the Knights came in the 4th quarter of the
game as Quarterback Sam Trulock ran the ball in at the 9:55 mark.
The score capped a 12-play 66-yard drive that encompassed the first
part of the last quarter. The Knights were not able to cross the
line in earlier portions of the game, and now must regroup as they
welcome familiar face in Ferrum College.
The Knights will to find an answer to the run defense that
has plagued them this season. Brevard took advantage of the Knights
to set a team record for yards gained in a game. A bright spot for
the visitors was their ability to keep the Tornado passing game in
check.
Offensively, SVU was dominant in the air as they racked up over
200 yards. Wide Reciever Brad Schultz again had a solid game with
eight receptions for 79 yards and a long of 43. Trulock hooked up
with nine different targets, and the spreading of the passing game
will be a positive for the Knight coaching staff to build on.
Matt Mellor continued his progression as a punter as he averaged
over 35 yards per punt, with two of his punts inside the 20 yard
line. Mellor also contributed on the defensive end where
he totaled 8
tackles, 2 solo and 6 assists. Vernon Joines, Jr. had a huge impact
on the game as he recorded 14 tackles, 12 solo and 2 assist, and
forced a fumble. Clark Steele also contribute providing SVU with
the only sack of the game. Devin Huch recorded an interception for
the Knights.
A frustrating aspect for Knight coaches will be the number of drives that
ended prematurely via turnover. Indeed, the Knights led the game in
time-of-possession, but could not translate that into more than two
red-zone scoring chances, and one touchdown.
Ferrum will come to play Sept. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00
at Parry McCluer high School. The Knights will look to record their
first win of the season, as well as thei first win against the
Panthers. SVU fell to Ferrum last year 7-34.
