UNIONTOWN, Pa. Bryce
Pendleton led the Southern Virginia Men's Basketball team in
both points and rebounds, and helped the team overcome Rochester
College, 73-63 to move on to the USCAA Championship game. Pendleton
scored 22-points and pulled down 8-rebonds as the Knights overcame
a first half deficit to top the #2 seed of the tournament.
Pendleton was joined by fellow senior, Cory
Evans, who pulled down 8-rebounds as well, and put in 17-points
to give the Knights the victory, and help lead them to only their
second trip to the USCAA Championship game in program history.
The Knights had trailed at the half 29-25. The game was close
throughout the first half, and both teams had opportunities for
leads. SVU had only converted 37% of its shots hitting on 10-of-27
from the field. The Knights only made 7-trips to the free-throw
line, and could only convert on two of those attempts.
The shooting woes changed drastically in the second half, as SVU
was lights out from beyond the three-point arc. SVU went 8-for-11
from three-point range, and outscored Rochester 48-34. Pendleton
was a force from outside as he 3-for-6 to contribute to the
offensive onslaught. Evans one-upped his senior teammate by going
5-for-7 from three-point land.
SVU's shooting percentage in the second half showed why they won
the game, as they hit on 66% of their shots. The free-throw
shooting improved, especially towards the end, as Rochester fouled
to get back in the game. The Knights shot 45% overall, but improved
to 53% in the second term.
The teams combined for 72-rebounds, with each team recording
36-boards apiece. The game was relatively error free as the game
saw only 23 turnovers (SVU 11, RC 12) total.
With the hot second-half shooting the Knights ended the day with
51% shooting from the field on 26-of-51 shooting.
SVU now has an overall season record of 16-8. The Knights will
now have a rematch with Talladega College for the USCAA
Championship. The Knights fell to the Tornadoes last year in the
semi-finals, as Talladega went on to win the tournament. The
championship game is scheduled to begin at 9:00 pm EST. The game
can be followed via audio through the SVU athletic website, and
through YouCastr on the USCAA website.
