LEXINGTON, Va. An opening match win at the Washington &
Lee Tournament helped the Southern Virginia volleyball team take
fourth overall at the tournament. Nicole
Gwynn helped the Knights during the tourney, as she recorded
58-digs over the course of the four games.
SVU started well in the first match, as they faced off against
McDaniel College. Led by Brynn
McGinn, who recorded 14-kills in the match, the team raced to a
25-19, 25-19, and 25-21 sweep, to give the team its second win of
the season. SVU was hoping to have momentum, as they then faced off
against Transylvania University. Despite the early match success,
the Knights could not continue the winning formula, and fell 25-20,
25-8, and 25-23. SVU was close in the first and third sets, but
could not get the breaks to win, and extend the match for a
win.
The following day's action proved to be as frustrating for the
Knights as the Transylvania match. The early morning competition
saw the Knights face off against the tournament hosts in W&L.
The Generals jumped to an early set lead, as they scored the first
set win 25-10. It looked to be a quick match for the hosts, but SVU
had other plans, and a marathon second set ensued, with the Knights
showing the potential they have, and fighting for every point.
Ali
Krebs recorded 15-assists for the match, and pushed the Knights
against the hosts. Shyanne
Ison recorded four kills, as the teams went beyond the 25-point
mark. SVU was pushing for the win, but W&L seemed to have an
answer every time, and finally eked out the 35-33 win. The Knights'
charge spent, the team could not prevent a quick loss in the third
and deciding set, 25-10.
In the final match of the tournament, SVU faced off against
Averett. A similar pattern of close sets and then a lopsided score
against the Knights would be followed. Coming close in the first
set 25-22, the Knights could not prevent Averett from winning, big
25-12 in the second, and closing them out, 25-18, in the third.
With the loss, SVU falls to 2-7 on the season. The Knights return
to action Sep. 14, when they travel to take on Mary Baldwin. Game
time is 6:30 pm.
