NORFOLK, Va.—A balanced attack by Virginia Wesleyan College (3-2) allowed the Marlins to earn a 6-1 victory over the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team Wednesday night at Foster Field in Norfolk, Va.

Southern Virginia (0-4) was led by senior Kyle Tyree, who had two shot attempts on the night and scored a goal on a header from a Carlos Munoz cross just 1:46 before halftime.

"We're showing signs of progress and I'm happy with the way the team continues to fight and battle," said Southern Virginia Director of Soccer Matt Grawrock. "These tough opponents are serving as great competition to prepare us for the conference season. We're optimistic that we have a good plan in place and that things are coming together. We will just keep battling and things will come our way."

The Marlins were instrumental in keeping the ball on Southern Virginia's half of the field, which yielded a 33-4 shot attempts ratio advantage and 11-1 margin on corner kicks.

Six different Virginia Wesleyan players scored one goal apiece with three goals occurring in each half. Seven Knights logged a complete game of 90 minutes played, while Tyree managed four minutes of rest during the game. Freshman Sam Bunnell and junior Caleb Cluff each registered on shot attempt with both on goal.

Virginia Wesleyan's Connor Kirkham earned the win to improve to 3-2, while Southern Virginia's Declan Johnson falls to 0-4 for the year. Johnson earned nine saves during the game, including seven from the first half. 

Southern Virginia next competes Saturday at home against Bridgewater College. Kickoff is set for a 4:30 p.m. start at The Fields.
