MURFREESBORO, N.C.—Freshman Jamilla Gambee and sophomore Tatiana Monsen led the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Chowan University Wednesday afternoon in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

The Knights' leading scorer, Monsen, started the scoring streak 13:12 minutes into the first half. Ten minutes later, Jamilla Gambee scored her first of two goals on the day. Moments later, Monsen netted her second goal past Chowan goalie Marissa Ghani to end the half with the Knights up 3-0.

"We bounced back in a big way after the tough loss at Salisbury last weekend and we came out with energy and focus," said Southern Virginia head coach Matt Grawrock. "We played our style of soccer and it was our most complete game to this point of the season. We took a step forward today and gave the girls some good reps and time on the field."

Freshman Valerie Cruz, assisted by Monsen, scored her first goal of the season to start the second half.

Chowan kept with it as Sierra Hargraves was able to take advantage of a Southern Virginia defensive miscue and score a goal to cut the lead to 4-1 for the Knights. The Knight defense clamped down to get back on track and deny the Hawks of any additional scoring opportunities.

Gambee then took a pass from Cruz and quickly answered back with her second goal of the night. Fellow freshman Shirley Morales-Llan, assisted by Gambee, was able to work her way past the Hawk defense for her first goal of the season and a final 6-1 lead on the Hawks.

The Knights outshot the Hawks by a 45-2 margin, allowing senior goalie MaKenzie Cox one save in the first half. The Knights had 18 shots on goal and were denied 12 goals by Chowan goalie Ghani.

The Knights will stay home to host Christendom College for its last non-conference matchup of the season. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at The Fields of Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia.
