ARLINGTON, Va.—Hoping to snap a three-game losing streak, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team earned a tally in the win column with a 3-1 victory at Marymount University Wednesday night in Arlington, Virginia.

The victory was the Knights' second over a Capital Athletic Conference opponent this season to improve their record to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the league race. The Saints fall to 3-13 and 1-6 in the CAC.

"It was a step in the right direction and I'm proud of the way we played tonight," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patino. "This is the level we always want to play at. The goals scored were team goals and a boost for our confidence."

Junior Josh Smith got things going for the Knights at the 17:34 mark with a goal to put Southern Virginia up early.

Just two minutes later at the 19:31 mark, sophomore midfielder Carlos Munoz put the Knights up 2-0 with another score in what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Seconds later, junior Erik Gutierrez notched another Knight goal for a commanding 3-0 Southern Virginia lead. The Santa Barbara, California, native took the ball from a Saint turnover and shot it from 45 yards out to take the Saint goalie by surprise and snuck it in for the goal.

Altogether, the Knights scored three goals in just over two minutes to earn the win.

The Saints would rebound at the 29:32 mark with a goal by Carlos Sanchez to cut the Knight lead to 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining before the half. Both teams went scoreless in the second half.

Southern Virginia returns home Saturday for a CAC matchup with St. Mary's College of Maryland. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at The Fields of Southern Virginia.
