Men's Soccer Drops Match to Frostburg State to Close Season

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va.—In a game that appeared to be going into overtime for the fifth time this season, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell to visiting Frostburg State from a late goal to give the Bobcats a 1-0 victory Wednesday evening at The Fields.

In the 84th minute, Bobcat Nabayee Tesfu took a shot at Knight keeper Efren Gutierrez, which was deflected and rebounded by teammate Rodrigo Valenzuela in the middle of the box and put into the open net to lift Frostburg State to the victory.

"The win tonight gave Frostburg a third seed in next week's CAC tournament, so I'm excited to see that our guys could hang with one of the top teams in the conference," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patino. "We showed improvement over the course of the year and I'm excited for the future. Tonight we played together and worked as a team, which was the goal all season long. We're going to keep our heads up and know that we're headed in the right direction."

Junior forward Josh Smith led the Knights with four shots on the night while sophomore defender Cort Cox contributed two.

Frostburg earned 19 shot attempts for the game led by Brandon Lutz' five. Tesfu and Bryan Whitmore contributed three attempts apiece.

Knight keeper Efren Gutierrez logged six saves on the night to the Bobcat keeper's four.

Southern Virginia closes the 2014 season with a 6-14 mark and two Capital Athletic Conference wins just one year removed from a 1-16 season in 2013.
