Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Facing off against the No. 11-ranked team in the country, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team dropped its road contest against Christopher Newport University Tuesday evening at Captains Field by an 8-0 margin in Newport News, Virginia.
The Knights were unable to contend with Christopher Newport's offensive attack throughout the match. The Captains took control of the game from the get-go as Jalon Brown scored just 30 seconds into the match off a Ryan Balfour assist. The home team would not look back as it scored three more goals in the first frame to take a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Christopher Newport (11-1-2, 2-0-1 CAC) found the back of the net four more times in the second half, finishing the game with 35 shots, 27 of which were on goal.
Southern Virginia (4-9, 1-2 CAC) took four shots on Captains keeper Sam Lesko with Knight defender Hunter Gonzalez getting the one shot on goal for the visitors. Carlos Munoz led Southern Virginia with two shots for the game.
Efren Gutierrez led the Knights with 19 saves while in the box.
Men's soccer has just one day off before it hosts Christendom College on Thursday, Oct. 9, at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia. The first kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
