Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the defending CAC regular season champions Christopher Newport University Tuesday evening in Newport News, Virginia, to end a three-game winning streak.
In the first half, the Knight defense held the Captains to eight shots and only one shot on goal. The Knights had three shot attempts and two shots on goal to counter.
The second half saw both teams anxious to put one in the net. The Captains' Joy Piirto, assisted by Allie McWilliams, found her way into scoring position twice within less than a minute to put Christopher Newport up, 2-0.
The Knight defense and keeper MaKenzie Cox made adjustments to deny the Captains any more goals. Cox picked up five more saves before freshman Valerie Cruz sunk a direct kick from 40 feet out to cut the lead to 2-1.
Cox was able to garner three more saves and hold the Captains to a 2-1 victory. The Knights were unable to get a second shot past the Captain defense and keeper Carly Maglio, who tallied four saves on the night.
The Captains outshot the Knights by a 26-6 margin and an 11-1 shot-on-goal ratio. Cox added eight saves for a total of 44 on the season and a .786 overall save percentage.
The Knights will stay on the road as they head to CAC foe Wesley College for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 11, in Dover, Delaware.
