BUENA VISTA, Va.—In the final non-conference matchup of the season, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team defeated the visiting Christendom College Crusaders, 3-0, at The Fields Thursday night in Buena Vista, Virginia.
Southern Virginia was consistent in its attack, scoring the three goals on 41 shot attempts and 18 shots on goal.
"I was pleased with our effort in the second half and we played more closely as a team," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patiño. "We passed the ball around much more crisply and we finished our possessions. We had a season-high shot total, so we need to keep up the aggression on the offensive end and continue to attack the net."
Freshman Colby Briggs' two goals make him the new leading scorer for the Knights this season. Briggs found himself in the right place at the right time twice, as he kicked a deflected shot past Christendom's keeper Richard Blank in the first half for a 1-0 lead and again midway through the second half for a final 3-0 victory.
Junior Erik Gutierrez, assisted by Josh Smith and Jared Attridge, netted his fourth goal of the season to open the second half to give the Knights a two-goal advantage over the Crusaders.
Crusader keeper Richard Blank picked up 15 saves for the night. Southern Virginia's Efren Gutierrez recorded two saves during his time between the posts.
Resuming league competition, the Knights now travel to Wesley College in Dover, Delaware for a 1:30 pm game time on Saturday.
