LYNCHBURG, Va.--Even with four saves in the first half by Southern Virginia University senior goalie MaKenzie Cox, the No. 18-ranked Lynchburg College won by a 3-0 score Friday night in Lynchburg, Va.
The Hornets scored two goals within the first six minutes of play and tallied another in the second half en route to the win over the visiting Knights.
Lynchburg (1-0) started strong, firing 18 shots in the first half, with six shots on goal including the two goals. Southern Virginia (0-1), after a shotless first half, finished with five shots and three on goal. The Knights' first shot of the game came in the 65th minute when freshman Haylee Grimmer entered the game moments before. She finished with two of the team's five shots, including one on goal.
Southern Virginia junior Alicia Blackham and sophomore Kora Jewell added shots on goal in the loss, while MaKenzie Cox finished her 31st career start with eight saves and a .727 save average.
The Hornets were led by senior forward Dessi Dupuy, who was a part of all three scores with two assists in the first six minutes and a goal in the 52nd minute.
The Knights play their second game of the Lynchburg Tournament Saturday evening at 5 p.m. in Lynchburg against another ODAC member, Roanoke College.
