Box Score By Nick Porter
LYNCHBURG, Va.-After a hard-fought battle that appeared would require overtime to settle the outcome, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team allowed a goal with only 16 seconds remaining for Roanoke College to escape with a 2-1 victory in the second game of the Shellenberger Classic hosted by Lynchburg College.
The Knights (0-2) were whistled for a penalty just outside the penalty box, where the Maroons' Ashley Barnes snuck the ball into the net off a free-kick cross from Abbie Guarino to put the game away with little time left on the clock.
Southern Virginia (0-2) struck first with a score by sophomore forward Tatiana Monsen when her unassisted shot on goal found the net in the tenth minute. From that point the Knights would earn only five more shots and place one other shot on goal.
Roanoke (2-0) outshot the Knights by a 32-7 margin, but was held scoreless until a goal in the 66th minute by Courtney Yoke.
MaKenzie Cox and Autumn Cox split time in goal, tallying four and three saves, respectively. Monsen, Kora Jewell and Sierra Sorenson each recorded two shots in the loss.
The Knights will look for their first win of the season at Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
