Men's Soccer Falls in Double OT to Visiting Hampden-Sydney

Box Score

By Nick Porter

BUENA VISTA, Va.—For the third time this season the Southern Virginia University men's soccer program fell in double overtime, this time at the hands of visiting Hampden-Sydney College by a 2-1 score with only 1:15 remaining Friday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.

A highly anticipated matchup tabbed as the Tourbeau Sports Game of the Week on NSCAAtv.com saw the Tigers' Liam Hogan score the game-winning goal following a fight for the loose ball deep in the box to lift H-SC to the win

"Losing is tough," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patiño. "We've been in every game, so it's tough to lose in the second overtime with only a minute left."

The first goal of the game, in the 54th minute, was scored by Hampden-Sydney (3-2) after a HSC shot rebounded from the cross bar. Southern Virginia (1-4) would equalize in the 75th minute when freshman Cabot Arne's forward pass would find Carlos Munoz for the goal-scoring flick above the HSC keeper.

Junior goalkeeper Efren Gutierrez (1-1), who shut out Ferrum College in the season opener and missed three games due to injury, allowed two goals but had 10 saves during his 109 minutes in the net. Twin brother and teammate, Erik Gutierrez, led the Knights offensively with three shot attempts, including one on goal.

The Knights have a short break before their next contest Saturday when they take on the Methodist University Monarchs.

"Tomorrow's game will be one of game and team management," Patiño said. "We just need to be more disciplined. A lot of our goals we have given up are late in the game. We are a young team and we need to learn how to finish."

Sights are now set for the Monarchs (3-0), who average five goals per game and are picked to finish second in the USA South Conference preseason coaches' poll.

Game time is Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Fields, where the Knights will work to end a four- game skid.
