BUENA VISTA, VA—The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell 7-0 to the visiting Methodist University Monarchs Saturday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.

The 2013 ODAC champion runner-ups outshot the Knights by a 26-4 margin and a 10-1 shot-on-goal ratio.

"Methodist has an impressive team and they certainly play like a top 25 team in the country," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patiño. "It was a good learning experience for our guys to see what an experienced team plays like. It was good for them to see what a program can and should look like."

Three minutes into the game, sophomore Seth Harrison of Methodist made the first goal after a cross from teammate Chris Murphy. Eirik Nordseth and Stefan Cyvin followed suit near the end of the half with one unassisted goal apiece to end the half with a 3-0 Monarch lead. 

The Knight offense was unable to penetrate the Monarch defense for a goal. Jose Rivas-Cruz managed the only shot on goal for the Knights.  Erik Gutierrez, Carter Woods and Colin Flynn had one unsuccessful shot apiece. Nordseth of Methodist netted three more assisted goals early in the second half, bring his total to six goals this season. Stefan Cyvin scored the seventh and final goal of the game and now totals five goals this season.

The Monarch offense overworked the young Southern Virginia defense. Efren Gutierrez was between the posts and tallied 10 saves and a .588 save percentage. Nick Martens and Alex Rabone split the time in the box for the Monarchs. 

The Knights hope to learn from their loss and pick up this season's  second victory as they head to Washington Adventist University on Wednesday, Sept. 17th for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
