Box Score

By Laura Workman

BRIDGEWATER, Va.—Notwithstanding an early 1-0 lead, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team fell 3-1 to host Bridgewater College Tuesday afternoon in Bridgewater, Virginia.

Freshman Jamilla Gambee dribbled past the Eagle defense nearly 10 minutes into the first half for the first and only goal for the Knights. Less than 10 seconds later, Bridgewater's Keri Rager, assisted by Anna Theisen, fired a deflected shot attempt past senior goalie MaKenzie Cox.

The Eagles took advantage of their field position after a Southern Virginia foul to allow Keri Rager to net the second Bridgewater goal of the night.

The Knight defense denied four shot attempts, but was overly aggressive and was awarded a yellow card. The Eagles took advantage of their field position once again, allowing Julia Baca to score the third goal for the Eagles.

The Knight defense continued to pressure in the second half and deprived the Eagles of additional scoring opportunities. Cox tallied 10 saves in the first half, and two in the second to put her passed the 200-saves mark in her Southern Virginia career, more than any other Knight goalkeeper.

The Bridgewater defense was equally aggressive as they tallied two fouls and also rewarded a yellow card. The Knights had seven shots and three shots on goal during the game, allowing Krista Kelly and Haylet Talbott of Bridgewater one and two saves, respectively.

The Knights are back in action Friday night as they host Valley Forge Christian at 7 p.m. at The Fields at Southern Virginia University.
