BUENA VISTA, Va. –The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team's six-game losing streak came to an end Friday night with an 8-0 shutout victory against the Patriots from the visiting University of Valley Forge Friday night at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.
Five different Knights scored in the offensive showing including Carlos Munoz, Carter Woods and Colby Briggs, who each had two scores. Erik Gutierrez and Jared Attridge also added goals for the Knights. Gutierrez scored the first goal from a cross by Colin Flynn in the 15th minute and the others would follow, including five in the second-half.
"We had a great performance as a team, and I'm very pleased that we had five different goal scorers," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patiño. "The team looked sharp and our younger players rose to the occasion."
That occasion was their second shutout victory at home, limiting the Patriots to only three shots in the 90-minute match.
The Knights dominated in time of possession, spending most of the game in the attacking third where they fired off 35 shots and 18 on goal, some of which came as a result of the 10 corner kicks the Knights earned.
Efren Gutierrez earned his second win in goal for the Knights, playing the first 57 minutes of the match, saving the Patriots' only shot on goal and earning the shutout.
Patiño and the Knights look forward to their next game at Bridgewater College on Tuesday, the final match before conference play starts next Saturday on the road.
The next home game for men's soccer will be a non-conference contest hosting Emory and Henry on Tuesday, Sept. 30th at 6 p.m.
