HARRISONBURG, Va.—After a grueling 110 minutes of play, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 double overtime tie as it visited Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The Knight defense denied the Royals' shot attempts the entire first half while the Southern Virginia offense had 12 shot attempts and one goal. In the 20th minute, sophomore Tatiana Monsen dribbled past defenders and took a shot in the upper left corner to earn the only goal for the Knights.
Nearly thirty minutes into the second half, the Royals were finally able to get a shot attempt but Knight senior goalie MaKenzie Cox was able to make the save. The Royals' third corner kick in the 72nd minute proved successful as Sara Shenk Moreno, assisted by Morgan Hill, deflected the ball into the Southern Virginia net.
Eastern Mennonite's goalie, Becca Borg, blocked three more Southern Virginia shot attempts and Cox saved one to keep the score 1-1 heading into overtime.
Moreno attempted a goal within the first minute of overtime play and Hill followed behind with a corner but four-year starter Cox kept it out. Freshman Jamila Gambee took a shot with two minutes left but was unsuccessful.
During double overtime, the Knights had several attempts but were unable to get a shot into the net. Hill, of Eastern Mennonite, took one last shot at Cox, but was unsuccessful yet again. The squads ended the duel in a 1-1 draw.
The Knights continue to look for their first win of the season as they host Division II Barton College on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. at The Fields of Southern Virginia University.
