BUENA VISTA, Va.—Picking up its third win of the season, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team topped ODAC opponent Emory & Henry College Tuesday night at The Fields of Southern Virginia University.

The Knights were able to net four of the six shots on goal while goalie Efren Gutierrez had four saves and allowed one goal for a .750 save percentage. Southern Virginia outshot the Wasps by a slim 12-10 margin but took advantage of its scoring opportunities.

"I'm pleased with the way we battled and turned everything up a notch in the second half," said Southern Virginia head coach Josh Patiño. "We played to our strengths and took advantage of mismatches. Josh Smith played a great game with two goals and everyone played fundamental soccer. We have a healthy team this week so we're looking forward to playing at our top level."

Carter Woods attacked the Wasp defense early in the first half off an assist from Smith to give the Knights an early 1-0 advantage. The two squads played solid defense to end the half with a 1-0 score.

Both team were held scoreless until the 76:48 minute mark when Smith received a pass from Carlos Munoz to take a 2-0 lead on the Wasps with 15 minutes remaining.

The Wasps quickly answered back as Kenny Sterne of Emory & Henry passed to Zach Quest to put one past Gutierrez to knock the score to 2-1.

The Knight offense wasn't finished as Smith netted his second goal of the night off a penalty kick attempt. Moments later, freshman Colby Briggs teamed up with Erik Guitierrez to net his own goal of the night for a final 4-1 lead on the Wasps.

Men's soccer resumes conference play Saturday, Oct. 4, at home as it hosts CAC foe Penn. State Harrisburg. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.
