BUENA VISTA, Va.—A Kora Jewell goal with just minutes remaining in regulation of the Southern Virginia University women's soccer game with Barton College resulted in a 1-1 tie after two overtimes Saturday night at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
The sophomore from American Fork, Utah took a pass from teammate Tatiana Monsen in the deep left corner of the box and soared the ball across the field. With the defensive expecting a pass, Jewell wound up for a shot and it sailed over the outstretched arms of Barton keeper Carson Moore and into the upper right corner of the net to tie the game at one apiece.
The shot can be found at the 3:19:24 mark of the webcast.
Originally scheduled for 7 p.m., a two-and-a-half hour lightning delay forced the game to start at just before 10 p.m. and finish past midnight with the two overtime periods added on.
Midway through the second half, Barton freshman Haley Bigler earned her first goal of the season after managing to get behind the defensive line of the Knights for a breakaway goal.
The Bulldogs outshot the Knights by a 24-7 margin and had nine shots on goal to the Knights' two. Barton's goalie, Carson Moore, tallied two saves during her 110 minutes in the box. Southern Virginia's MaKenzie Cox and Autum Cox split the 110 minutes and earned five and four saves, respectively.
The Bulldogs (1-1) struggled to get past the aggressive Knight defense, as they were unable to capitalize on five corner kick attempts. With three minutes left to play in the second overtime, junior defender Alicia Blackham blocked a shot by Barton's Kasey Byzewski just inches away from the goal line to help the team earn the draw.
The Knights (0-2-2) seek their first win of the season as they head to Randolph College on Tuesday, Sept .9, at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia.
