FROSTBURG, Md.—The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team won its second straight game Wednesday night against league opponent Frostburg State by an overtime score of 86-83 in Frostburg, Maryland.
The win marks the first time the Knights (5-16, 3-12 CAC) have won two in a row this season.
In the first half, the Knights shot 51.7 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bobcats (10-12, 6-9 CAC) by one as the teams went into the break tied up at 39.
"We shot well the first half, and hoped to keep it going in the second," said Southern Virginia head coach Tony Caputo.
The Knights got off to a quick start in the second half, scoring the first two baskets, but the Bobcats continued to claw their way back in the second half, never letting the Knights' lead exceed five points.
The Knights regained the lead with a jumper from junior guard Kevin Walker to put them up 75-74 with 1:48 left in the game. A Southern Virginia foul with 20 seconds left sent the Bobcats' Jerel Carter to the line, who sunk one of two shots, leaving the Knights the ball in a tie game. An unsuccessful buzzer beater sent the game to overtime.
Back-to-back buckets for the Knights kept the game out of the Bobcats' reach, and the Knights held on to win 86-83. Forward Taylor Larson hit a crucial three-pointer in the final minutes to provide Southern Virginia just enough to come out with the victory.
Four Knights had double digits on the night led by center Michael Neufville's 20 points and eight rebounds. Walker had a near double-double with 16 points and nine assists, freshman forward Taylor Larson ended the night with 15 points and six rebounds, while sophomore forward Justin Langford added 10 points from the bench.
Torrell Goodman led all scorers with 24 points for the Bobcats.
The Knights look for three straight wins as they head home Saturday to take on the Spartans from York College of Pennsylvania at 3 p.m. at Knight Sports Arena.
