Box Score FERRUM, Va.—The Southern Virginia men's soccer team earned their first win of the season in a tight contest at Penn-Roediger Field at Ferrum College, narrowly beating the Panthers 1-0.
The only goal of the night came at 12 minutes in the first half when junior forward Gregg Allen scored an upper-90 goal off of a Gabriel Ramirez assist to put Southern Virginia (1-5) at a 1-0 advantage.
"The team has been training to share the ball a bit more and attack with numbers," said head coach Josh Patino. "Tonight they did that especially well in the opening half. We have some areas we need to tighten up and improve but tonight it feels good to be in the win column."
Allen, from Provo, Utah, led the Knights with two shots on goal. Isaac Smedley, Josh Smith and Christian Rice also added shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Keenan Carroll had a spectacular shutout night in goal with eight saves.
Ferrum College (1-4) finished with 22 shots and eight on goal, but was unsuccessful in scoring.
The Knights return home to The Fields on Thursday, September 17 to host Roanoke College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
