BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia men's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 victory over William Peace University for their first win of the season.

The first half of play was evenly matched between the two teams with the Pacers outshooting the Knights 5-4.

In the 73rd minute, the Knights earned a penalty kick and freshman Brandon Zapata found the back of the net. Zapata scored again in the 85th minute on a second PK of the match.

"The boys had a tremendous performance this afternoon. It was exciting and fun to watch. They're committed to the program and each other," Coach Patino remarked, "we had moments where we looked really sharp and others where we need to clean up a bit but overall, each player gave a great effort and earned it today. I am proud of the direction we are heading."

In the final minute of the game William Peace capitalized on the free kick just outside the box to make the score 2-1.

The Knights will look to start a streak as they travel to Washington and Lee University on Thursday, September 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
