FROSTBURG, Md. — In their final conference match of the year, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team was defeated by Frostburg State on Wednesday evening by a score of 3-1.
The first half was fairly even, with the Knights (4-14, 1-8 CAC) taking eight shots and the Bobcats (6-10-2, 4-5 CAC) with twelve. The difference came in the 30th minute after a Southern Virginia foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for Frostburg State, which they finished to get on the board first. They would take the one-goal lead into halftime.
The Bobcats took control in the second period by possessing the ball well and creating opportunities in the attacking third. The effort paid off in the 70th minute when a red card shown to Knights' midfielder Ben Knapmeyer gave the Bobcats their second penalty kick of the game, which they again completed. Playing a man down, the Knights would concede the third and final goal just seven minutes later on a breakaway.
The Knights managed to put eight of their eleven shots on frame in the match, including two each from seniors Gregg Allen and Marrott Weekes. Freshman Jeremy Wilson and defender Matt Diede also had two cracks at goal.
Frostburg outshot the Southern Virginia 21-11 for the game, and five Knights players were booked to only one Bobcat.
Senior goalkeeper Colin Flynn finished the match with the loss despite making seven saves.
Southern Virginia will play their final game of the year next Thursday, November 2, at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
