EMORY, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team picked up two big wins this weekend, besting Emory & Henry College 5-2 on Friday and Bridgewater College 1-0 on Saturday in a two-day event hosted by Emory & Henry.

On Friday, the Wasps (3-3) struck first, scoring from a header in the sixth minute. The Knights (3-4) were able to answer in the 21st minute with a goal from senior Marrott Weekes, scoring off of a nice pass from Jeremy Wilson. Fifteen minutes later, Knights defender Matt Diede headed a Wilson corner kick into the back of the net, sending the Knights into halftime with a one-goal lead.

Southern Virginia came out firing in the second half, with Wilson heading a goal of his own in from a Nathan Allen free kick in the 48th minute. After the Wasps scored another, Weekes extended the lead off an assist from fellow senior Jackson Farnsworth. Midfielder Gregg Allen sealed the deal with a fifth goal in the 86th minute, finishing a Diede free kick with only a couple minutes left in the game.

The Knights took full advantage of their corners and free kicks, scoring four of their five goals from set pieces. Both the Knights and the Wasps took 15 shots in the match, with each team putting seven on frame. Goalkeeper Colin Flynn was solid, picking up four saves in the match.

Southern Virginia took on Bridgewater College (2-5) on Saturday, winning 1-0. After a slow-paced first half, things picked up in the second period, with 15 shots being taken between the two teams.

The stalemate was finally broken by sophomore midfielder Anthony Bowden in the 57th minute, scoring the first goal of his career after a Bridgewater turnover. The Knights' defense played tough for the rest of the match, allowing the Eagles very few clean looks at goal.

Flynn was phenomenal in goal, picking up the clean sheet after saving all four of the Eagles' shots on goal.

Southern Virginia returns home on Wednesday, taking on Roanoke College. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Knights Stadium.
