BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia men's soccer team fell in a non-conference match to Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday evening by a score of 5-1.

The Tigers (6-2-1) struck first in the 17th minute after a rebounded shot was cleaned up. Twelve minutes later the Knights (3-7) evened the score at one when freshman Tyson Ricks put a shot through the keeper's legs after a beautifully chipped assist from teammate Edwin Hernandez. Hampden-Sydney would take the lead again before halftime however with a goal in the 33rd minute.

The second half favored Hampden-Sydney as the Tigers gained momentum with another score in the 54th minute to take a 3-1 lead. Just two minutes later, a Knight defender was red-carded denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by swatting a ball with his hand. The Tigers completed the penalty kick and the Knights played the rest of the match down a man. Hampden-Sydney scored their final goal of the game late in the second half after a Knights' turnover.

The Knights took eight shots on the game to the Tigers 25, led by Ricks and Jeremy Wilson who both had two.

Goalie Colin Flynn made seven saves in the game and finished with the loss.

Southern Virginia will resume conference play on Saturday as they hit the road to take on Penn St.-Harrisburg. Kickoff will be at 10:00 a.m.
