No. 13 CNU Tops Women's Basketball

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team dropped their conference matchup with No. 13 Christopher Newport University 92-57 on Wednesday, marking the team's third loss in a row.

The Captains (12-2, 6-1 CAC) jumped out to a 23-12 lead in the first quarter, took an 18-point lead into the halftime break, and cruised to the blowout victory. With both teams employing full-court pressure defense the Knights (8-5, 2-5 CAC) turned the ball over 52 times, and the Captains had 27.

Leading the Knights with 10 points each were forward Shelby Butler, who also grabbed 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Abby Olsen. Forwards Katie Garrish and Alexus Barnes chipped in nine points and five rebounds apiece. CNU's defense held Garrish to single-digit scoring for the first time this season.

The Captains had a total-team effort in the win with 12 players scoring in the game.

Southern Virginia will look to get back in the win column on Saturday as they take on Salisbury University at home. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Knight Sports Arena.
