Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Southern Virginia women's basketball team set records on Wednesday evening, but the effort was not enough to take down No. 11 Christopher Newport, falling 93-57.

The Knights (12-10, 5-10 CAC) set two facility records at the Freeman Center, the first in total blocked shots with 13 (the previous mark was 12), and another in individual blocked shots by freshman forward Katie Garrish, who swatted eight of the Captains' shots (the previous mark was seven). Garrish's performance marked a near triple-double as she also scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Captains (20-2, 14-1 CAC) used their high-pressure defense and frequent substitutions to keep the Knights off-balance, forcing them into 41 turnovers on the night, while the Captains coughed the ball up 24 times. The Knights had a below average game shooting the ball at just under 40%, but they did post a 70.6% mark from the free throw line.

Guards Cory Stout and Bryndie Ballam added eight points apiece for the Knights, while Alexus Barnes dished out a team-high five assists.

Christopher Newport was led by Kiana Kirkland, who scored 20 points on 8-14 shooting off the bench.

The Knights return home on Saturday as they take on St. Mary's College of Maryland. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Knight Sports Arena.
