Southern Virginia Routed by Shenandoah 5-3

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell 5-3 to Shenandoah University after the Knights surrendered two goals in the second half.

The match was physical (nine yellow cards total) and featured 24 combined shots on goal.

In the first half, the Knights (0-4) scored first on a Elijah Mendoza cross that found Zach Martin in the middle of the box. Three minutes later the Hornets' (1-1-1) Trace Becker scored with the assist from Derrick David.

Southern Virginia responded just before the half with Martin's second goal of the match in the 43rd minute with the assist credited to Sam Kelly.

In the second half, Martin was not finished, as he found Matthew Jones for his first goal of the season, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead. The Hornets went on to score four unanswered goals in the 56th, 66th, 82st, and 88th minutes, creating a lead large enough he Knights could not recover.

Southern Virginia will now visit Hampton-Sydney College Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7:00 p.m.
