BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 campaign on Tuesday with a decisive 96-82 victory over Bridgewater. The Knights were led by a lights out performance from junior forward Savanna Christensen and her career-high 27 points.

"It's always nice to get the first game under our belts," said head coach Lynette Schroeder. "It was great to see Katie and Savanna lead the team with a pair of double-doubles and have Courtney and Sophie come off the bench and making an immediate impact."

The Knights (1-0) came out firing in the first quarter, shooting 63.2 percent (12 of 19) from the field while holding the Eagles (0-1) to 12.5 percent (2 of 16).

After a lackluster start, the Eagles came storming back in the second quarter, led by 11 points from junior guard Ahlia Moone. Despite the hot shooting, Bridgewater still trailed Southern Virginia 35-48, going into the half.

Preseason All-American Katie Garrish picked up 12 of 14 total points in the second half. Garrish also led all players in securing 13 rebounds for the Knights. Southern Virginia won the rebound battle 49-28.

Several reserves played a pivotal role for Southern Virginia, as well. Sophomore Courtney McKrola came off the bench to score 18 points, going a perfect 8-8 from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Sophie Wright was also one of four Knights in double figures, filling up the box score with 14 points, three assists, three rebounds, and three steals.

Despite 33 turnovers, Southern Virginia was able to stymie Bridgewater in the second half thanks to impressive defense in the paint.

The Knights will look to continue their solid play when they return to action at Shenandoah on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
