Royals Steal Home-Opener from Knights

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday evening, falling 1-0 to nonconference opponent Eastern Mennonite.

After a scoreless first half, the Royals (2-1) pulled ahead in the 65th minute to gain a 1-0 advantage. The Knights (0-3) created some opportunities at goal but couldn't find the back of the net.

In the 85th minute, the referee showed a red card to an Eastern Mennonite player, leaving Southern Virginia with a one-man advantage for the rest of the game. Despite the edge, the Knights were unable to score the equalizer.

Gabriel Ramirez and Peyson Webster led the Knights with three shots each, while Sam Melo and Kanon Heaton each attempted two.

The Royals outshot Southern Virginia 19-11, and the Knights' defense did an excellent job of limiting the Royals' clean looks at goal.

Jacob Solis picked up the loss in goal while finishing with seven saves.

Southern Virginia hits the road this weekend as they take on Ferrum College on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 pm in Ferrum, Virginia.
