GREENSBORO, NC. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team fell in a hard-fought match to Greensboro College Thursday night 38-9.
Beginning the match, with a forfeit at the 125-pound class, the Knights trailed the Pride 6-0. In the 133-pound class, Aaron Freidhof had an impressive victory over Paul Baugerger 8-6 via decision, who placed sixth last year at regionals.
In the 141-pound class, Hai Siu of Greensboro defeated Tyrell Barney in the final 30 seconds by way of pin. Ryan Dominique of Greensboro followed Siu after in the 149-pound class with a victory over Matthew Rosson in the 149-pound class via tech fall 17-0 to make the match score 17-3.
Tyron Dudley, Trevor Carter, and Joel Kanagy of Greensboro were the victors of the next three matches. Dudley earned a victory in the 165-pound class over Morgan Peterson by decision 7-5. Carter defeated Gavin Blair in the 174-pound class via pin, and Kanagy followed the script of Carter with a pin of his own over Cole Oldham in the 184-pound class.
In the 197-pound class, Matt Speelman secured the second victory of the match for the Knights. Speelman locked in a victory over Vince Wilson by decision 7-5.
Alex Brunner was the Knights final wrestler of the night going up against Brandon Williams in the 285-pound class. Brunner edged out Williams and earned the victory by decision 2-1.
Southern Virginia University continues its season on January 18th with a dual at Lynchburg University. The duals are set for 11 a.m.
