BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team fell at home against Davis and Elkins 40-12 and York (Pa.) 39-12 Saturday afternoon.
"Overall, we wrestled much more competitively today than our last time out," said head coach Logan Davis. "We fought through positions better and showed some real improvement. We still have a long way to go before regionals in four weeks. If we can maintain this attitude and momentum, we should be ready to peak when the time is right."
The Knights started the day against Davis and Elkins, falling into a 6-0 hole after a forfeit at the 125-pound weight class. Aaron Freidhof followed for Southern Virginia at the 133-pound class, where he fell in a close 7-5 decision to Craig Cook.
Southern Virginia dropped its next six matches until the 197-pound class Matt Speelman pinned Charles Morrison in 56 seconds for the Knights' first points of the day. Speelman's victory gives him his 45th win of his career and his eighth pin of the season.
Alex Brunner then followed wining by way of forfeit at the 285-pound class for the final 40-12 in favor of the Senators. Following the victory, Brunner earned his 70th collegiate win.
Against the Spartans, the Knights scored its first points of the match at the 133-pound class, Friedhof won a 7-3 decision over Logan Fox.
After dropping the next three weight classes, Morgan Peterson picked up the victory by way of a 9-3 decision over Nicholas Secor in his first match of the day.
The last win for the Knights came behind Nico Ramirez in his first match of the day by way of a first period pin in 2:15 over Thomas Tabatneck. The victory is his 14th pin of the year and marks his 50th collegiate victory.
Southern Virginia will now travel to crosstown rival Washington and Lee Saturday, Feb. 1, with a start time of 6 p.m.
