BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team hosted a tri-match in Knight Arena Saturday afternoon, falling to Averett 38-12 and Alderson Broaddus 27-25.
After forfeiting the 125-pound match and falling behind 6-0, Aaron Freidhof took on Joseph Jones of Averett. Freidhof won the thriller of a competition by way of decision 8-7.
Averett used four consecutive victories in the 141, 149, 157, and 165-pound classes to take the 29-3 lead before Matthew Rohrdanz picked up a quality victory in the 174-pound class. Rohrdanz took down Noah Wienclawski by pin in 1:30.
After George Moseley of Averett earned a victory over Cole Oldham by pin in the 184-pound class, senior Matt Speelman took on Kowan Lee in the 197-pound class. Speelman secured a win by decision 5-0 and in the 285-pound class, Nico Ramirez fell to Trent Ragland by decision 9-3.
Southern Virginia University earned 18 points off of forfeits in the 133, 149, and 285-pound classes to gain an early lead.
Tyrell Barney took down Brantley Guckert in the 141-pound class by major decision 15-3, and Morgan Peterson picked up a win over Derek Schmidt in the 165-pound class by decision 12-7.
In the 174-pound class, Nick Sulhoff defeated Matt Rohrdanz by disqualification, and Josh Dailey of Alderson Broaddus earned a victory over Cole Oldham by pin in the 184-pound class.
Gino Sita defeated Matt Speelman in the 197-pound class by decision 9-2 before the final match was forfeited by Alderson Broaddus, securing the 27-25 win over the Knights.
