Women's Volleyball Sweeps NC Wesleyan and Methodist in Double Header Weekend

STAUNTON, VA. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team added two more wins in their undefeated weekend tournament Saturday afternoon at Mary Baldwin University, sweeping both NC Wesleyan and Methodist.

Game Notes

Game One:

  • After quickly going up 13-6 with six different Knights getting kills, the team did not look back
  • Southern Virginia closed out the first set with five unanswered points, taking the 1-0 lead 25-15
  • Set two saw the Bishops put up a fight outscoring the Knights 13-6 at the end of the set, but Southern Virginia held them off, going up 2-0 with a 25-22 set victory
  • Both teams went back and forth exchanging points, but the Knights used a 10-3 scoring run to jump ahead 20-16 late in the set
  • The Bishops came within two points 22-24, but an attacking error would cost them the game with the Knights completing the sweep 25-22

Game Two:

  • Set one saw Southern Virginia down 4-1, but the Knights used a 5-1 scoring run led by two Emma Steiger service aces to jump ahead 6-4
  • Elle Warnick and the offense continued to put the pressure on Methodist using a 9-2 scoring run to gain a comfortable 15-9 lead
  • Southern Virginia maintained their lead, taking the 1-0 advantage 25-18
  • The Knights again ran to a 15-7 lead in hopes of a quick set, but the Monarchs used a 10-2 scoring run to tie the set at 17
  • Elle Warnick and Katelyn Chamberlain connected for a kill that killed Methodist's momentum
  • Emma Steiger added another service ace, and a final kill from Sydney Hopkin from Elle Warnick put the Knights up 2-0
  • Southern Virginia made quick work of the final set of the game, jumping to an 18-3 lead led by five Sydney Hopkins kills, three aces from Julia Monson, and eight assists from Elle Warnick
  • Later in the set, Brooklyn Porter assisted Elle Warnick for the kill, and Mallory Rath set up Sydney Hopkin for the final kill of the game to complete the sweep

Southern Virginia returns to Knight Arena Tuesday, October 5 for the Knight's Senior Day. The squad will take on Mary Baldwin at 6 pm.
