Box Score BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University football team took Averett University in the final home game of the season Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell to the Cougars 28-23.

- Southern Virginia opened the game up, going up 3-0 off of a 19-yard field goal by Derek Bass on the opening drive
- Averett responded in the second quarter with a 22-yard pass from Bryce Jackson to Isaiah Grice to go up 7-3
- Skylar Johnson put the Knights 9-7, bringing in a 17-yard pass from Colten Shumway
- The Cougars answered right back, scoring a 36-yard touchdown off of a Chase Nixon pass from Bryce Jackson with just two seconds on the clock before the halftime break
- To open the third quarter, Bryce Phipps ran for two yards to put Averett up 28-9 with four minutes remaining in the third
- Jalan Troy scored his lone touchdown of the game, bringing in a 27-yard pass from Colten Shumway
- With 1:23 remaining in the game, Shumway threw his third touchdown of the game, finding Jake Schenk open in the endzone to come within six points
- Jason Siaosi blocked a punt on the ensuing drive to give the ball to Southern Virginia on Averett's 36-yard line
- The Knights drove the ball to the two-yard line, but a costly unsportsmanlike conduct foul brought Southern Virginia back to the 17-yard line
- The Cougars locked in the victory with an interception by Nicholas Mintz with six seconds remaining in the game
The Knights will look to rebound, taking on NC Wesleyan Saturday, November 6, on the road in the team's final game of the season. Game time is scheduled for noon.
