Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, VA. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team opened their 2021 season taking on cross-town rival Washington and Lee University Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Generals 2-0.


Game Notes:

First Half

  • In the 12th minute of the game, Makinna Winterton blocked a shot on goal.
  • Brenna Wehner of the Generals sends the header high and above the goal. 
  • Sydney Kuhni-Liles displayed a strong defensive effort in the 15th minute, denying a crossing effort from Washington and Lee. 
  • Cameron Grainger got open above the box but sent her shot wide of the goal. 
  • Erin Hoeh followed up Grainger's shot with another great chance but sailed it wide.
  • With 20 minutes remaining in the half, the Knights shut down the corner kick opening.
  • Winterton advanced the ball into the offensive half and drew the foul, setting up the Knights' first free-kick opportunity. 
  • Off the free-kick, the Generals responded with a strong defensive effort, clearing the ball away. 
  • Grainger shoots high of the net again with ten minutes in the first. 
  • Louisa Bynum puts the Generals up 1-0 in the 40th minute, scoring from distance in the upper left corner of the goal.
  • Winterton draws another foul in the final minutes, setting up another free-kick opportunity. 
  • Bela Andersen misses the header off the free-kick, and the Knights head into the intermission down 1-0. 

Second Half:

  • Sam Berish gets the General offense going early with a shot high of the goal in the second minute of the half. 
  • Emma Mansfield had a wide-open shot on goal five minutes in, shoots high and to the right. 
  • Jami Kovatch received a good lead pass, gets a shot on goal, but the goalkeeper rejected the kick. 
  • With 36 minutes remaining, the Knights' defense blocked two shots on goal. 
  • Madi Leale steals the ball, taking the ball away from Sophia Roche. 
  • Off a corner kick from Washington and Lee in the 55th minute, the Generals scored again off of a failed clearing attempt out of the box. 
  • Kovatch and Winterton both got off one shot each but could not put the ball in the back of the net. 

The Knights continue their season, taking on Carroll in Knight Stadium for the squad's home opener. Game time is scheduled for noon.
