STAUNTON, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team took down conference foe, Mary Baldwin, Wednesday afternoon on a last-minute goal by
Colton Oman.
This was the third-ever matchup between the programs, with the first two games being split with the Knights winning the first game as league opponents last season at home.
The match was back and forth from the start, with both teams getting on the board within the first 10 minutes.
Southern Virginia kicked off the scoring with a seventh minute goal by
Ammon Lewis, his first of the year.
Samuel Jaggi played a ball in behind the defense to
Sam Melo who slipped past the back line. Melo controlled the ball and chested it down to Lewis who snuck the ball past the Mary Baldwin keeper.
The Squirrels weren't behind long, scoring less than a minute later to even the score line. Edward Headley got behind the defense and slotted the ball past
Spencer Young into the bottom left corner of the net.
A moment of individual brilliance would again give the Knights the lead.
Josh Dubinsky won possession back in the attacking half of the field and let the ball fly from well outside the 18, pinging the top right corner, for his first tally of the campaign. The team would hold onto the 2-1 advantage until halftime.
The second half was just as exciting as the first with goals from both teams. Mary Baldwin would even the score just five minutes into the second 45 after Yefferson Hernandez found the back of the net after a rocket of a shot from outside the box.
The back-and-forth affair continued throughout the second half with both teams generating scoring opportunities but neither team was able to convert. Young turned away seven shots in the second half and 12 overall, tying the game-high for the Knights this season. Melo thought he found a winner for his team in the 75
th minute but his left-footed shot was denied by the post.
The game looked to be heading towards a draw but in the final minute the Knights were given a throw in from their own half of the pitch that Melo took quickly. He sent the ball down the line to Lewis who played a beautiful ball to a streaking Oman in the center of the box. Oman did just enough to get the ball past the Mary Baldwin keeper to secure the teams first victory of the year.
"There wasn't much time left and everyone was eager to score," said Oman. "I saw Ammon making his run and the whole middle of the field was open so I gave it my best shot and ran. When the ball went in I couldn't believe it. It was amazing to finally get a win and celebrate with my teammates."
"The win means everything," exclaimed head coach
Payden Pemberton after the game. "The team definitely deserves this for the belief and heart they have shown and the desire to never give up. I am super proud of the whole team!"
Southern Virginia returns home for senior night on Saturday, October 29, when it takes on Pfeiffer at 6 p.m. in an important conference match for both teams.
