Southern Virginia Women's Soccer Blanks Meredith on Senior Night

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team took on league opponent Meredith College Friday night for the team's senior night, wrapping up the regular season with a 5-0 victory over the Avenging Angels.

In the sixth minute of the game, Makinna Winterton weaved her way through the defense, making her way into the goal box, spotting a wide-open Matia Murray, who sank the ball in the back of the net to put the team up 1-0 early in the match.

The Knights kept the pressure up, peppering the Angels' goalkeeper with five more shots, before Winterton again broke free from the defense, connecting with Lindsey Clausen, finessing her way past her defender to fire a shot from range into the top left corner of the goal, scoring team's second goal of the game to put them up 2-0.

With three minutes remaining in the first half, a deflected shot from Baleigh Aland set up a corner kick for the team. Kayley Wardle was called to take the kick, who crossed a pass to Lakyn Hansen, who used her height to her advantage, getting over the defense to head the ball into the net, sending the team into the break with the 3-0 lead.

Southern Virginia's defense was rock-solid during the first 45, not allowing a shot to be recorded by Meredith, while the offense did what was needed, getting off 17 shots.

Following two shots from Clausen to start the second half, Annalise Huber recorded her first-career point on the team on her senior night in the 55th minute, connecting with Makinna Winterton who fired a shot that was too much for the goalkeeper, pushing it past her hands and into the net for the team's fourth goal of the game and Winterton's seventh goal of the season.

Meredith kept the Knights off the board as long as they could, avoiding goals scored on six ensuing shots until Brianna Knight scored her first-career goal off a pass from Winterton to score the team's final goal of the match.

Southern Virginia killed the remainder of the time, and walked away with the 5-0 victory and will now await the seeding for the USA South Conference Tournament beginning on Tuesday, November 1st.
