Southern Virginia Women's Soccer Hosts Brevard in First Round of USA South Conference Tournament

BUENA VISTA, VA. — After securing the No. 2 seed following their win over Mary Baldwin Friday night, the Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team readies for Brevard College in the First Round of the USA South Tuesday night in Knight Stadium.

"Conference play and tournament play is always difficult as you have the added element of familiarity and rivalry," stated Head Coach, Rob Dahl. "We expect to get the best effort from each opponent and are preparing diligently to grind out results"

The Series:
Both teams meet for the third all-time, and the second time this season, with the first meeting dating back to 2019 and the previous game coming three weeks ago on the road with both games resulting in a 1-1 tie.

In the latest showdown, Southern Virginia got the upper hand in the 37th minute after Morgan Romney put the team ahead 1-0. Ella Thomas created the scoring opportunity for Romney, recording the assist.

Three minutes later, the Tornados knotted the game up, using a Mikayla Zvekan goal off a Kiara Porcelli assist to put the team's lone goal on the board.

Both defensive units were locked in the second 45, not allowing a shot on goal to be recorded the remainder of the game, resulting in a tie.

Impact Players:
Makinna Winterton is back in the lineup and is determined to make up for lost time as the team has had to play multiple games without its captain and emotional leader. The junior forward is seeing the field well and will look to use athleticism and unselfishness to set up her teammates for scoring opportunities.

In goal, Alyssa Trueman has only given up 6 goals throughout the conference season and owns the back line.  The senior captain has demonstrated toughness, sound technicality, and has great hands and will continue her dominant play Tuesday night.

Annalise Huber is a physical presence on the defense, winning the ball in the air and is excellent at controlling the ball and starting the team's transition the other way and has a knack for finding the open man.

Game Details:
Kickoff is set for 5 pm in Knight Stadium. For more updates and details on the women's soccer team, be sure to follow @knight_wsoc on Instagram and @knightwsoccer on Twitter and visit knightathletics.com for live stats and streaming options.
