Knights Downed by Generals

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team (2-3) began its Thanksgiving break slate Tuesday afternoon, falling at the hands of cross-town foe, Washington and Lee (4-1).

The fast-paced affair was filled with intensity and physicality from the opening tip. Jack Lewis got the scoring started for the Generals, hitting a three-pointer after just eight seconds, and they would never give up the lead after that.

After stretching the lead to 16 points at the halfway mark of the first half, Southern Virginia would slowly claw its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to just five points after a Sam Jex three at the 5:23 mark.

A 13-2 run to close out the half would award a 16 point advantage to Washington and Lee at the midway point.

The Generals would continue their run at the start of the second stanza, making their first three shots to open on a 7-0 run and force an early timeout from Knights' head coach Adam Wardenburg.

After trading baskets for the next several minutes, Southern Virginia would decrease W&L's lead to 18 after another Jex three-pointer. The Layton, Utah native had the best game of his career, knocking down 60% of his shot attempts for nine points.

An 8-0 stretch by the Generals would push the advantage to 26, the largest of the game.

Dane Ibsen and Tyler Kartchner each added nine points off the bench, giving the Knights 27 total bench points, a season high.

Freshman Shaun Kenedy continued his exceptional play to begin the campaign, leading the Knights in scoring with 15 points while also adding five assists and rebounds.

Southern Virginia will remain at home for another non-conference battle against the Newport News Apprentice School on Saturday, Nov. 26 with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
