LEXINGTON, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team traveled across town to Washington & Lee University to compete in the W&L Invitational, splitting their four games, going 2-2 over the weekend.
Game One: Guilford
- Courtney Pinkston led all players with 15 kills, with Sydney Hopkin following with seven and Brenna Clyde adding five
- From the service line, Emma Steiger was a menace, recording six aces
- From the middle, Clyde and Ashley Torbeson dominated with five blocks apiece while Jilane Pedersen recorded three
- Down 17-15 midway through the first set, Emma Steiger took over, tallying five aces and leading the team on a 10-0 scoring run to take the first set 25-17
- After dropping the second set, the Knights bounced back to win the next two sets, dropping Guilford 3-1 in their first game of the weekend
- Sydney Hopkin recorded the final point of the match, recording the block with Jilane Pedersen coming in with the assist
Game Two: Gettysburg
- Pinkston again led all players with 17 kills, followed by Hopkin with 13, and Clyde with 12
- Tatum Matheny demonstrated her serving, recording three aces
- Torbeson continued to be a force at the net, tallying five blocks
- Defensively, Emma Steiger kept the team alive with a game-high 31 digs
- The first set needed overtime, with the Knights taking set one 27-25 after a Brenna Clyde kill and error by the Bullets
- After dropping the second set and winning the third, Gettysburg rallied to force a fifth set in the match
- Both teams were dead even through the beginning of the fifth before the Knights began to pull away 13-11 off a Hopkin kill and block
- Gettysburg came back and tied the set up at 13, but a costly error by the Bullets and a final kill from Courtney Pinkston locked in the 3-2 victory for the Knights
Game Three: Washington & Lee
- Pinkston recorded 18 kills, while Hopkin added 12
- Jilane Pedersen added five blocks while Steiger tallied 26 digs
- The Generals took the first set, but the Knights came together to take the second set 25-20 off a final Hopkin kill
- After W&L took the third set, Southern Virginia used a late set comeback in the fourth to force a fifth set
- The Knights were down 19-21, but two final kills from Pinkston set up the fifth set
- The Generals got up 6-2 early and did not look back
- A final 4-0 run locked in the five set victory for W&L
Game Four: Centre
- Jessi Fietkau got into the mix, leading the team with three aces
- Katelyn Chamberlain added solid playing time, blocking two attacks from Centre
- The Knights kept it close in the first set, only falling by four points
- The Colonels put the pressure on in the second set, dominating to a 25-11 set win
- Centre completed the sweep, taking the final set 25-19
