Box Score BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team welcomed cross-town rival Washington & Lee University to Knight Stadium Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup. The Generals used an early and never looked back, taking the match 3-0.
How it Happened:
First Half:
The Generals wasted no time getting on the board, capitalizing on a free kick to find an open Louisa Bynum, who redirected the kick into the back of the goal.
With 25 minutes remaining, Sarah Zimmerman got a header off in front of the goal, but goalkeeper
Alyssa Trueman stood tall denying the shot on the doorstep.
The defensive units stood their ground the remainder of the half, keeping the score 1-0 heading into the halftime break.
Second Half:
Washington and Lee repeated in the second half, scoring a goal within the first four minutes.
The Generals threw the ball in to an open Grace Wielechowski who drove the ball down the right side, spotting an open Helen Otteni who fired a shot from the right side of the box, sneaking it past Trueman to put W&L up 2-0.
With 24 minutes left on the clock, Sophie Berman connected with Wielechowski, who heel kicked the pass behind her to an incoming Emma Mansfield who placed the ball under the top crossbar, scoring the team's third goal of the game.
W&L's defense kept the Southern Virginia offense at bay, keeping the Knights off the scoreboard the remainder of the match, and locking in the 3-0 victory.
