BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Football team hosted NC Wesleyan in Knight Stadium for the teams' USA South Conference opener, with the Battling Bishops squeezing out the 14-13 victory.
First Quarter
- The first quarter saw both teams' defenses step up, not allowing either team to get on the board
- On their second drive of the game, NC Wesleyan was able to set up a 32-yard field goal opportunity, but Hunter Rice missed his target, keeping the score 0-0
- After two failed drives by both teams, no points were scored headed into the second quarter
Second Quarter
- Momentum was shifted in favor of the Knights when Josh Thomsen stripped Alex Stack at the 23-yard line, and Nate Matis recovered the fumble at the 22-yard line, denying the scoring opportunity by the Bishops
- On the ensuing drive, the Knights marched the length of the field to the 16-yard line after Isaiah Maxey connected with Matthew Johansson for 25 yards. An unnecessary roughness call brought the ball half the distance to the goal, setting the Knights up with first and goal on the eight-yard line
- On third and six, Maxey found Johansson in the endzone for the six-yard touchdown pass, putting Southern Virginia up 6-0
- Both teams ended the half exchanging turnovers, with the Knights fumbling at the at the two-yard line
- Jacob Taloa recorded his first interception of the season on the next drive, picking off Chaz Hirschman, and returning the ball 23 yards to the 50-yard line
- On the next drive, Isaiah threw his first interception, ending the half with Southern Virginia leading NC Wesleyan 6-0
Third Quarter
- Midway through the third quarter, the Knights drove the ball the length of the field setting up second and one at the Bishop's 15
- On the next play, Maxey handed the ball off to Cade Nelson, who rushed the ball 15 yards for the touchdown, putting the team up 13-0
- NC Wesleyan got their first points on the board on their next drive, when Trevon Crank rushed the ball eight yards into the endzone, cutting the deficit to six points 13-7
Fourth Quarter
- Trevon Crank again rushed the ball up the middle, scoring his second touchdown of the game, giving his team their first lead of the game 14-13 with ten minutes remaining in the game
- The Bishops got the ball right back after the Knights threw an interception on the first play of their next drive
- Three plays later, Jemaar Robinson forced and recovered a fumble, giving the ball right back to Southern Virginia
- The Knights were faced with a fourth and two on the NC Wesleyan two-yard line, setting Josesph Kim up for the field goal
- Kim failed to convert, giving the ball back to the Bishops with under two minutes remaining
- NC Wesleyan ran out the clock, locking in their first victory of the season 14-13
