Bison Hold onto 1-0 Lead to Defeat the Knights

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team traveled to the District of Columbia to take on Gallaudet University for their fifth straight road game.

This was the third ever meeting between the two schools, with the Bison winning the first two matchups.

Southern Virginia controlled much of the possession through the first 15 minutes of play with most it coming in their own half of the field. They were unable to move up the pitch into their attacking third and create any scoring chances.

Against the run of play, Gallaudet got on the board first. Southern Virginia would give up possession in the middle of the pitch and midfielder Amjad Al-Siyabi made a beautiful pass in behind the defense. Jonathon Waterman used his pace to get onto the end of the pass, make a move around the Knights goalkeeper, and pass the ball into the back of the net.

After giving up the goal, the Knights picked up the pressure even more, making it difficult for the Bison to get the ball out their own half of the pitch. The Southern Virginia midfield really stepped up, working together to press high and apply pressure on the ball. Freshman Dallin Miller, Mitchell Cutler and Samuel Jaggi were especially influential in the center of the pitch.

The Knights back line did well to turn away any balls sent in over the top, with Josh Dubinsky heading many balls back to his teammates and setting up offensive opportunities.

The best scoring chance of the first half came in the 27th minute when Tanner Gonder laid the ball off to teammate Reed Robertson who settled the ball and tried to find the corner. Robertson didn't get the contact he wanted and Bison goalkeeper, Bode Aggas, made the save.

Southern Virginia started the second half with the same intensity they had in the first, but looked to get forward early and often.

A scoring chance presented itself in the 53rd minute when Dax Bryson juked around a Bison defender inside the box but sent his shot wide.

Alexandre Berry impressed in the midfield with his box-to-box play, cutting off passes and also playing in threatening balls to his teammates.

The Knights continued to have the lion's share of possession throughout the second 45, but weren't able to finish any half-chances that was created.

Dallin Chappell was able to keep Southern Virginia in the game when he saved a penalty and the ensuing rebound in the 88th minute, giving his team one last opportunity to come away with a draw. Chappell would finish with six total saves.

Gallaudet managed to see out the game, clinging onto the lead created in the first half, for their third win of the season.

The Knights will now gear up for conference play when they welcome the Tornadoes of Brevard College on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
