BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team resumes USA South Conference competition at home Saturday night, October 1, taking on NC Wesleyan University in Knight Stadium at 6 pm.
The Series:
Both teams meet up for the third time in program history, with the Knights confidently holding the 2-0 advantage.
The first meeting came in 2019 where Southern Virginia took home the 2-1 victory. The Battling Bishops scored in the 15th minute to go up 1-0, a lead which they would take into halftime.
Southern Virginia picked up the intensity in the second half, scoring two goals in a four-minute span, sparked by freshman Shelby Pulliam, who scored the first goal of her career on an assist from Audrey McKeon.
In the 70th minute, defender Tori Wescott found the back of the net to give Southern Virginia a 2-1 advantage, locking in the win for the team.
The latest meeting came in 2021 in Knight Stadium, with Southern Virginia dominating the match 5-1.
In the matchup,
Maybel Harris and
Makinna Winterton led the charge with two goals apiece.
The Knights' offense came to life early on with
Maybel Harris scoring the first two goals of the game within the first five minutes with an assist from
Anna Roberts, putting the squad up 2-0
In the fifth minute, NC Wesleyan's Caitlyn Butler cut the team's deficit to one, scoring an unassisted goal.
Starting the second half,
Makinna Winterton scored her first goal of the game unassisted putting the Knights up 3-1, followed by
Lauren Fowler getting into the mix in the 68
th minute, scoring an unassisted goal to put the team up 4-1
One minute later,
Makinna Winterton solidified the victory, scoring her second goal of the game.
Keys to the Game:
The Knights will need to come out strong, putting the pressure on the Bishop's defense with a strong offensive attack.
Southern Virginia will also need to take the pressure away from the defense, with the unit led by
Alyssa Trueman deterring 16 scoring opportunities in the past two games.
Makinna Winterton will be looked at to get the offense going, leading the team in points with nine points.
