BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team (8-6, 1-2) dropped another tight one in Knight Arena to conference foe, Greensboro College (6-7, 1-1), Tuesday night, 78-75.
The Pride held the advantage on the scoreboard for most of the first half, but the Knights kept it close, never trailing by more than seven points. A quick 5-0 Southern Virginia run in the final three minutes of play of the opening stanza cut the Greensboro lead to just one, 32-31, as the teams went into halftime.
Greensboro shot just 27 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but knocked down eight three-pointers, accounting for 75 percent of its points. Isaiah Pruett, who scored a game-high 20 points, and Ty Hill, who followed closely behind with 19, each made three shots from behind the arc.
A
Malakai Olson jumper early in the second half gave the Knights the lead and the teams would trade baskets and battle for the next eight minutes of play.
At the 9:45 mark, the Pride stretched the lead to eight points, their largest of the contest. Back to back three-pointers from
Dane Ibsen would square the game up at 64 with just over five minutes remaining, but a quick 8-3 run by Greensboro helped them take a five-point lead with just over a minute on the clock.
After trading baskets,
Shaun Kenedy pulled up from behind the arc and drilled a three-pointer to make it a two-point contest with 15 seconds left. The Knights quickly fouled, sending Pruett to the free-throw line where he would make the first but miss the second, but Matthew Brown came away with the rebound and called a timeout. Brown was fouled following the ensuing inbound, sending him to the line for two shots. After he missed the first, Head Coach
Adam Wardenburg called a timeout to draw up a play for the end of the game.
The second free throw attempt also came up short, giving the Knights an opportunity to tie the game. Abe Connelly pulled down the rebound and got the ball to Kenedy with under four seconds on the clock. Three players converged on the Knights guard, forcing a turnover and ending the game with a score of 78-75.
"We know we didn't play like us and we know we are a better team than what we showed," said
Jamarcus Robertson, who had career-high's in points with 14 and three-pointers with four. "Hitting shots always feels good, but we failed the mission which is what matters most right now.
Southern Virginia will now prepare for a two-game road stint over the weekend, playing William Peace on Friday and Pfeiffer on Saturday.
"Knowing we are in conference play we can't dwell in the moment," continued Robertson. "We just have to get back to work and lock in on the mission ahead."
