Knights Put Up Impressive Fight Against Top-Ranked Captains

BUENA VISTA, VA. — In the ninth meeting between the two teams, the Southern Virginia University Women's Basketball team faced off against the top-ranked team in the nation, Christopher Newport University in Knight Arena. Although the Knights fought valiantly, they were unable to overcome the Captains, falling 77-66.

Presley Heggie showed up in the biggest game of her career, posting 13 points, along with seven rebounds and three assists. Her freshman counterpart, Abigail Snyder, had a solid outing, knocking down 50 percent of her field goals (4-for-8) while going 2-for-3 from three. Coming off the bench, Alyssa McKrola was savvy on the court, recording 11 points, and shooting 75 percent from the field.

Addison Newman was able to get a quick bucket 17 seconds into the game, but neither team was able to record points for the next two minutes. Sondra Fan scored her team's first points of the game two and half minutes into the game off a three, before jumping ahead 7-4 off an Anaya Simmons layup in the paint. CNU made their way into the second quarter with a six-point lead, 18-12.

The Captains had a solid second quarter, outscoring the Knights 24-15, but Southern Virginia came out hot with a 10-4 blitz to start the third. The Knights played their best basketball of the season, outscoring the No. 1 team in the nation 21-16, heading into the final quarter down 58-48. Presley Heggie and Maria Savvun led the team with six points each, with Heggie scoring three layups and Savvun knocking down two threes.

With momentum on their side, Southern Virginia kept the pressure up in the fourth quarter, but CNU answered every bucket with one of their own. The Captains managed to only score one more point than the Knights, 19-18, locking in the 77-66 victory and remaining undefeated.

The Knights hit the road this weekend, traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina, to resume conference play. Southern Virginia takes on Meredith College on Saturday, January 21, with game time set for 2 pm.
